What is chiropractic?
Chiropractic is the largest natural primary health care profession in the world. According to the Association of Chiropractic Colleges, "chiropractic is a health care discipline which emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery.
Chiropractic is a natural method of healthcare that focuses on correcting the causes of physical problems, rather than treating symptoms. Chiropractic is based on the simple premise that a normally functioning spine will allow the brain and nervous system (which is protected by spinal column) to relay its messages to the rest of the body to function normally.
How does the nervous system affect my health?
The nervous system is the area of the body that controls and coordinates all the functions of your organs, glands, muscles, cells etc... every cell in the body has nerve intervention. This is how the brain sends its messages to the rest of the body through the nervous. When you stub your toe, an ant runs across your arm, or you feel hot or cold that is the nervous system at work.
The nervous system is controlled by the brain. The brain is the generator of the body and the nervous system is the master control system. The brain sends messages down the spinal cord into the spinal nerves. There is a spinal nerve that comes out a small hole in between each vertebra ( bones of the spinal column). The nerves from there travel to everywhere in the body. If these nerves become interferred with the messages the brain is sending become distorted or are not delivered to the organ, muscle, were ever they are intended to go. This is a break down in the system and gives symptoms and potentially disease to set in.
As chiropractors we look for the misalignments in the vertebra in the spine. These misalignments put pressure on and interfere with the nerve coming through. This is called a subluxation. it causes a breakdown in the system and decrease in function.
The lack of function may be imperceptible to the conscious mind. You may experience a symptom such as numbness, tingling, or pain.
What is a subluxation?
A subluxation is a vertebra in the spine which is out of alignment. It is causing an interference to the spinal cord or spinal nerves or both. Further vertebral subluxations interfere with the vital communication between the brain and the cells, tissues, organs of the body, which travel from the spinal cord and spinal nerves. The body, with Vertebral Subluxations is more susceptible to aches, pains, disease and an inability to function at its optimal level.
What causes subluxations?
Subluxations are caused by three different types of stress:
Physical Stress: Physical stress is the easiest for most people to identify. It can be an accident, fall, other trauma and difficult births. These are known as impact injuries. The other type which are just as lethal are accumulative microtraumas. This is a repetitive force on the body. This would include incorrect ergonomics in the workplace, home, or car. Also in this category is bad posture and poor sleep positions.
Emotional/Mental Stress: Today this is the largest cause of stress and contributes greatly to health problems. Emotional stress is created by ones lifestyle and pressures put on by society. Emotional stress can result from family problems, financial difficulties, work related problems and/or conflicts. It is important to understand that emotional stress causes a lot of tension on the muscles which in time can pull vertebra (bones) out of alignment.
Chemical Stress: Chemical stress which is less understood by most people yet just as serious as the other too. The body has to detoxify everything it takes in. This includes preservatives and additives from our foods, alcohol, tobacco smoke, air pollution, medications, drugs, etc. In our society today, with all the medication our society takes, I see chemical stress moving slowly up to number one. Our society is overmedicated and riddled with addictions.
All three of these types of stress can and will cause subluxations, which will if not sooner than later cause a decrease in the way the body functions. With subluxations it is impossible for the body to function at its optimal level of health.
Is chiropractic care safe?
Chiropractic as far as safe has a great track record. Unlike the medical professionals with medications, drug overdoses, addiction to medications, drug combinations and erroneous treatments. Chiropractic uses natural noninvasive methods of treatment. Chiropractic in the research is showing to be light years ahead of traditional medicine. Another good indicator is look at malpractice premiums and claims of chiropractors compared to the medical doctors, especially orthopedic surgeons.
What type of education do chiropractic doctors receive?
Doctors of chiropractic are well-educated. Chiropractic education and medical education are similar in many respects. The main difference is in our treatment plans. We diagnose the same but medical doctors treat the symptoms with drugs and surgery. Chiropractors treat what we feel is the underlying cause the subluxation with spinal adjustments. After graduating from four years of graduate work with a doctor of chiropractic degree, each candidate must pass a four part national board examination. In California all four parts must be successfully completed and passed. Last chiropractic doctors apply to a governmental or professional licensing board and pass a still more difficult test before being granted the privilege to practice. After licensing doctors must complete continued education each year to keep their license current. Many doctors go on to do post graduate work in anything from specializing in neurology to pediatrics.
Can I go to a chiropractor if I am under medical care?
Yes, you can still have your subluxations corrected if you are receiving medical care. Many patients of ours are co managed with a medical doctor and chiropractor. Dr. Talan many times if other medical issues/conditions become apparent with her patient will refer them to the correct health professional.
